If you run a small fleet (say 3 to 20 trucks or vans), you've probably weighed two options for keeping them clean: send drivers through a drive-through truck wash, or have a mobile crew come to your yard. We're a mobile company, so we have an obvious bias. We'll try to be fair anyway, because the right choice depends on your operation, and sometimes it isn't us.
How each option works
Drive-through truck washes are fixed locations with a wash bay, usually along highways and truck routes. A driver pulls in, the truck goes through an automated or hand-wash bay, and the driver pays per wash or on a fleet account.
Mobile fleet washing brings the equipment to you. A crew arrives with a trailer or truck carrying water tanks, pressure washers and chemicals, and washes vehicles where they're parked, often after hours.
The real cost isn't just the wash price
When people compare the two, they often compare the posted price of one wash to a mobile quote. That misses the biggest costs of a drive-through wash for a small fleet:
- Driver time. Every trip to the wash is paid time: driving there, waiting in line, washing, driving back.
- Fuel and miles. A detour to the wash bay adds miles and wear to every truck, every time.
- Vehicle downtime. A truck in a wash line isn't on a route. For some operations that's fine. For others it's lost revenue.
- Scheduling friction. Somebody has to make sure each truck actually gets washed. In practice, "wash it when you get a chance" often means it doesn't happen.
To compare fairly, add up a month of those costs for your fleet and put them next to a mobile quote. Our pricing page has an estimate calculator for the mobile side.
Where drive-through washes win
Being honest about it:
- Very small fleets that pass a wash anyway. If you have one or two trucks and a wash sits right on their route, a drive-through can be simpler and cheaper.
- Irregular, one-off washes. If you need one truck washed before one event, driving it to a wash bay may be the fastest option.
- Trucks that are rarely at base. Long-haul trucks that are always on the road may be easier to wash where they stop.
- Some specialty cleaning. Interior washouts of trailers and tankers usually need specialized facilities.
Where mobile washing wins
- Zero downtime. Vehicles are washed while they're parked anyway, between routes or overnight. They go back out clean.
- No driver time. Your drivers drive their routes. Nobody spends paid hours in a wash line.
- Consistency. A recurring schedule means every vehicle gets washed every visit. You don't have to track it.
- Whole-fleet visits. Washing everything at once is efficient, and volume pricing rewards it.
- Vehicles that don't fit or shouldn't drive far. Mixed fleets with vans, box trucks, trailers and equipment can all be done in one visit.
- Right finish for the vehicle. A mobile crew can choose the wash for each vehicle: a spot-free rinse for vans, a heavy-mud process for dump trucks.
Questions to ask before you choose
- How many vehicles do you have, and where are they overnight? If most of your fleet parks at one yard every night, mobile washing is usually efficient.
- What does an hour of driver time cost you? Include wages, taxes and overtime.
- How far is the nearest suitable wash bay, and how long is the wait?
- Is anyone making sure the trucks actually get washed?
- Where can wash water go at your site? Mobile washing needs a plan for runoff, and some cities, like Frisco, restrict wash water from reaching storm drains. A good mobile company sorts this out before the first visit.
A middle path
Some fleets use both: a mobile crew for regular washes at the yard, and a drive-through bay for the odd truck that needs a wash while it's out on the road. There's nothing wrong with that.
How we price mobile washing
We price per vehicle, based on size, service level, how often we wash and how many vehicles we wash per visit. There's a minimum charge per visit, and a travel fee only beyond 20 miles from Frisco. The details are in Fleet washing cost in DFW.
If you want to test mobile washing without committing, new accounts get their first wash free for up to 5 vehicles. Or request a quote and compare it to what you spend now.
